John Hodge: Thanks for underscoring the limitations of the HF integral.
Remember my motto – no human constructed theory can be the final theory for they are always groping in the twilight zone (vast amount of ignorance with little bit of knowledge!).
I can articulate many more relevant shortcomings of HF integral. That would not make it a “falsified theory”. It has its own range of successful applications; just as any other theories like QM, Relativity, etc.; the ranges are only broader for these latter theories. HF integral cannot even be applied in the rapidly evolving fields of Nano Photonics and Plasmonic Photonics because of the proximity of the proximity between material particles being in the range of a wave or less. People directly use Maxwell’s equation to accommodate extended properties of material dipoles. It would be ridiculous for optical engineers to use complex Maxwell’s equations, instead of HF integral when they are propagating light through homogeneous media as in macro diffracting apertures, telescopes, microscope, imaging systems, etc., etc.

Chandra.

Chandra:
The HF integral has been experimentally shown to apply to diffraction in a limited (not infinite) domain. It is indeed fundamental for much of physics. The limitations include slit characteristics, mask-screen distance, wavelength, and a plane wave uniform across the slit (not photons).

But the derivation of this math equation assumes the Huygens-Fresnel Principle and model. Many ad hoc assumptions such as the obliquity factor / wavelet had to be added to make it work. I suggest the HF Model(Principle) has been falsified by experiment.
