[General] Macroscopic quantum self-trapping

Dear David,

You are (at least partially) right.

Some comments: firstly one does not "go from a photon to an electron" - this conserves neither charge nor spin. One can, for example, go from two photons to an electron-positron or vice versa.

Secondly, at the single photon level, the problem is related to that of "quantum collapse" - for example the simple emission (and subsequent absorption) of a quantum. In QED this is merely a probability, not a process. One really needs to understand this (simpler) process before one even tries to say anything sensible about the detailed particle creation process.

To address this one needs to work within a proper theory that underpins both photon and electron. One needs wavefunctions. - not just hand-waving. Martin and I are working on elements of this within our theoretical framework at the moment.

I have no time to enter into a debate about this at the moment as it is far more productive to get on with solid work on the problem. I am, however, thinking of calling a workshop on these processes, to be held in or around Glasgow, during the summer.

Regards, John W.

All,

I have had this concern that even with a model of a photonic electronic (pick any one), that we do not understand what the process(es) are to get from a photon to an electron.

Here is another candidate process. By locking photons together in a lattice called macroscopic quantum self-trapping, the energy becomes a solid or fluid like object.
